I am the host of The Green Tunnel Podcast, a show produced at R2 Studios at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. Although we’ve finished the show, you can still listen to it on all the podcast platforms (plus YouTube). Across 51 episodes, our show explored the history and culture of the America’s most iconic multi-state long-distance hiking trail, the Appalachian Trail.
We delved into topics including the quirky history of trail food, the story of the shelters and other structures built along the trail, and dangers one might encounter during a hike. We have rare audio from famous hikers like Grandma Gatewood and Gene Espy. There’s even an episode on the history of the trailside privies…The Crappalachian Trail (naturally). After all, even that has a history.

If you’re interested in the history of the Appalachian Trail, the history of hiking and backpacking, or the history of Appalachia, then this show is for you. All of our episodes are deeply researched in the archives up and down the trail and include interviews with some of the many people who make the trail possible. We also interview hikers in the wild and historians who provide us with context on the events and people we describe.
We’re on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Google Podcasts, Podchaser, and just about any other podcast platform you can think of.
And if you want more — here are some Appalachian Trail themed podcast episodes I’ve appeared on in the past few years.
